Message from the Chair
|
"Why should I come to
the Entrepreneurs' Network?"
A good question and one that I am very happy to answer. There are several
reasons. First, the meeting is an excellent opportunity to learn how to start a
business. The E-Net was founded on the principal that there was a need for some
practical information on the process, for the would-be-entrepreneur who needed
to become comfortable. Second, there are fantastic networking opportunities. If
you are seeking help or seeking to provide services, we have formatted the
meeting to allow time and space for you to get together with others. Of course
you have to do your part, so don't plant yourself in a chair and wait for the
talk to start - circulate. Several companies have found capital, management
team members or critical services during the networking session. Third, it is a
great opportunity to practice your elevator speech, and to hear how to not do
it. We give time for anyone to stand up and say something about themselves or
their business. This isn't easy to do without practice, especially when it's in
public and not just in front of a mirror. Try it, you may not like it, but it
is a skill worth having and it can put you in touch with a resource you might
not otherwise find. Come and join our group. It's worth the trip and it would
be a bargain at twice the price.

Why Entrepreneurs Should Worry About
Market Research
by Ralph Grabowski
Who is
going to buy the darn thing? Invest twice as much in market research as
engineering to find out.
To an engineering audience this might seem outrageous. This author is often
asked, "How can you possibly suggest that we devote more of our precious
capital to marketing than to engineering, when we have this heavy-duty
technology to develop?"

The Role of the CFO
by Ron Fitz
It's an
unfortunate fact that very few small businesses are willing to allocate the
necessary resources to the finance function in their firms. This emanates from
a lack of understanding of the function of a CFO, and his/her contribution to
the success of the company. I will touch on only two of the responsibilities of
a CFO, and why they are critical to the vitality of any business.

Can You Really Afford to Focus Your Marketing Effort?
by Franklin Cooper
Many
companies today market and sell their products and services on a
"catch-as-catch-can" basis. Their prospects include a few people that
showed an interest at a trade show, a person met on a trip, some people who you
met at a seminar. etc. This is opportunistic selling - and usually does not pay
off. Focus on the other hand, is a concentrated effort on a particular
industry, market or audience.
