Meeting Overview:

Need to raise capital? Not yet ready for or able to secure venture capital or angel investments? Have funding needs not appropriate for VCs or Angels? This panel of entrepreneurs will show how companies were started, funded, and grown using alternative and non-traditional sources of funding. This session will be useful to those who are developing business or financial plans and to those who have already gotten their companies underway and are looking for additional sources of funding.

Panel:

Emma A. Durand, Chief Technology Officer, American Biophysics. As CTO, of the maker of the Mosquito Magnet©, Ms. Durand is responsible for management of technology development for rapid product introduction, vendor qualification, and design engineering for cost reduction and ease of manufacturing and policing and protection of intellectual property. She was also a partner, co-founder, and Chief Technology Officer of Evalutech, LLC. Her career has been devoted to understanding and improving the process of wealth creation through technological innovation. She has over 30 U.S. and international patents in her name covering diverse areas of mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering; 24 of these patents have been licensed to Fortune 100 companies. Ms. Durand has gained significant knowledge in determining what is required for a new technology to become a commercial success. Her credentials include: founding Sublimation Systems Inc. Division of Chomerics Woburn MA, the pioneer of four color four-color printing of dyes; co-founder of Key-Tech Inc., the pioneer of engineered plastic dye infusion, and co-founder of Poly-Flex Circuits Inc., the pioneer in flexible polymer die attach circuit boards. Ms. Durand attended the University of Rhode Island and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Tony Winiewicz, principal of AEW Engineering & Design, is a passionate innovator with 20 years' experience in robotics, industrial equipment, medical, power generation, and construction industries. He is an effective manager of design, construction and innovation projects ranging from robotics, to large scale power plant construction. While functioning as Director of Engineering, Tony was responsible for daily operations of the start up company innerseal - a robotics development effort for the natural gas pipeline industry. innerseal designed and built a robotic system for internally sealing natural gas pipelines under live flowing gas conditions - eliminating the requirement for a shutdown or customer interruption. Other efforts include a robotic arm for attachment to a quadriplegics' wheel chair called "The Helping Hand", power plant installations and upgrades at the MIT district energy plant, and various other design and innovation efforts. Current projects include: a robotics project with Louisiana Tech University under a Department of Energy Grant, and an OEM innovation effort in the industrial coatings equipment sector with pump, heating and automation technology.With his keen ability to conceptualize, create, solve problems, and realize new opportunities, Tony and his team at AEW Engineering assist companies, startups, and individuals with Product Development, R&D, New Concepts, and Innovation.

Michael Lu - Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, BioDefense - As the founder and CEO of BioDefense, Mr. Lu serves as the Company's visionary and driving force in commercializing the Mail Defender™, which decontaminates mail from biological contaminates including anthrax, and bringing the product to the mass market. Prior to establishing BioDefense, Mr. Lu was the founder, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of two successful start-ups, Medical OnLine, Inc. in Lexington, Massachusetts and Laser Medical Corporation in Burlington, Massachusetts. Through both of these ventures, Mr. Lu was instrumental in developing the initial products, closing multi-million dollar U.S. and international sales transactions, creating profitable operations and directly investing and raising more than $70 million in investment capital. Mr. Lu started his career at Siemens as a systems software engineer and then went on to become a senior systems engineer in the Computer Engineering Advanced Development Division of Honeywell Corporation. Mr. Lu has obtained three U.S. patents, as well as a number of international patents. His research focused on computer imaging and graph processing as well as speech and vision recognition, radiology, magnetic resonance imaging, advanced x-ray, CT and nuclear imaging. Mr. Lu received a B.S. from the University of Massachusetts, earned straight A's from Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate school, and further earned two graduate degrees in Robotics Engineering and Computer Science, both from Harvard University.

Alan G. Cummings, CEO, Seldon Technologies,Seldon Technologies has developed a nanotechnology process and equipment that reliably removes microorganisms from fluids, without the use of heat, ultra-violet radiation, chemicals, contact time, or significant pressure. This technology has been the primary focus of the company's efforts to date and is now ready for large-scale production.

Michael S. Chester, President, International Manufacturing Consultants. Michael Chester has founded and built several companies, set up manufacturing operations, set up global joint ventures and commercialized technologies. He helps companies develop strategies, raise investment funding, and set up operations for manufacturing, software development, and distribution world-wide. He spent 16 years with IBM designing robots and automation, marketing and selling IBM products to manufacturing companies, setting up global operations and supply chains, and founding an IBM consulting organization for manufacturing clients which he grew into a $20M business. Mr. Chester served as VP of Business Development for Tonbu, a startup which enabled manufacturing and engineering organizations to collaborate on product development and speed up time to market. Tonbu raised $36M and grew to 142 employees at its peak. Mr. Chester lived in China for one year while consulting to companies owned by the Machine Building Ministry and taught graduate courses at Hunan University. He works extensively in China today. He has also competed on the TV show Robot Wars. Mr. Chester earned a BS in Electrical Engineering and MS in Computer Engineering from Syracuse University and a MBA from Union College . He serves as Chairman of the IEEE Boston Entrepreneurs' Network and is a member of the Case Presentations Committee of the MIT Enterprise Forum.
