Meeting Overview:

Our panel of capital providers and entrepreneurs will talk about how companies get funded in today's venture and business climates. They will guide the audience in the process of raising money, to understand what is important to investors now. Our panelists will address these issues and provide insight about investor perspectives, due diligence, positioning your company to be attractive, and identify critical milestones to gain entrée to the capital market providers. They will also identify the hot fields for current investments, and share their opinions on what the capital markets may look like in the next year.

Matthew J. Crowley, Director Venture Investments, Boston University Office of Technology Development (OTD) www.bu.edu/otd/vc/index.html.,
The Boston University OTD co-invests $500k to $1.5M in Series A or Series B rounds, in early stage technology and life science companies.
Mr. Crowley is responsible for managing all of OTD’s venture capital investments. He joined OTD in 1999 from Mars & Company, an international strategy consulting firm. Matt is a board observer at Elixir Pharmaceuticals, MicroCHIPS, Nitronex, Outstart, Sandburst, SelectX Pharmaceuticals and StarGen. He also represents OTD’s investments in Crossbeam Systems, Infinity Pharmaceuticals and Scion Pharmaceuticals. Previously, he worked with MapleTree Networks, MicroE Systems, Nitromed, Synchrologic and Visualization Technologies. He also represents Boston University as a Limited Partner in a number of venture capital funds including Accel Partners, Alliance Technology Ventures, Alta Communications, Charles River Ventures, Commonwealth Capital, Domain Partners (Advisory Board member), Kodiak Ventures, New Enterprise Associates, Oak Investment Partners, Oxford Bioscience Partners, Polaris Ventures, Sequoia Capital Sevin Rosen and Sigma Partners.

Mr. Crowley holds an AB from Princeton University, where he completed an interdisciplinary major in Physics and the Philosophy of Science. He has also worked in Japan and speaks Japanese.

Craig S. Sockol, President and CEO, Repromedix Corporation, www.repromedix.com
Founded in 1994, Repromedix is the leading national reference laboratory for infertility diagnostics. Mr. Sockol founded Repromedix with the mission of helping physicians solve their most difficult cases of unexplained infertility and recurrent pregnancy loss. His mission was not purely professional: He and his wife had experienced infertility and only identified the problem after discovering an esoteric test. The couple has since had two children. Craig also co-founded Immunotech Corp., where he directed all stages of company growth including financing, R&D; partnerships, strategic alliances, and mergers. Immunotech was in the vanguard of developing immunodiagnostic laboratory products including invitro fetal monitoring and physician office thyroid screening.

Craig was Manager of New Products and Regulatory Affairs at Baxter Healthcare-Clinical Assays and held technical positions at Ciba-Corning. He holds a Master of Science degree in Clinical Biochemistry from Northeastern University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts.

Carl Stjernfeldt, Partner, Battery Ventures,

Battery Ventures is a leading venture capital firm that focuses on investing in technology companies at all stages of growth. Battery’s investments range from $5 million to $25 million over the life of the investment and they typically are the lead institutional investor in each of their portfolio companies. Since 1984, the firm has invested worldwide in over 180 companies across the communications, software, infrastructure, Internet/e-commerce, and media/content industries.

Carl joined Battery in 2000 and focuses on communications technologies and services. Carl sits on the boards of Arbor Networks, Broadbus Technologies, Cedar Point Communications, Red Sky Systems and Tejas Networks, and is a board observer at Optium. Prior to joining Battery, Carl worked for Cambridge Technology Partners as a client partner and project manager. He has also held several operational roles with Summa Four, developing telecommunications solutions for domestic and international service providers. Carl received a dual MS in Electrical Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm and Northeastern University in Boston. He received an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he currently teaches a course in entrepreneurial finance. Carl serves on the University of Michigan's Technology Transfer National Advisory Board.

Most recently Lawrence invested in and became CEO of Elecsci Corporation, www.elecscicorp.com a technology startup creating ownership of the field of technology called embedded electron charge. The companies focus is on producing �energy-harvesters� and self-powered sensors with noted applications as active RFID tags, bio-implantables, heel-strike, tire pressure, biohazard and acoustic. Lawrence has held profit & loss management positions at Textron (Avco), Arthur D. Little, John Brown Group, and Foster-Miller where he helped effect their business turn-around. He received a BS in Engineering and an MBA with high distinction in International Marketing and Finance concentration from Northeastern University. He has held a Top Secret clearance.
